Shirakami Sanchi is a general term used to refer to the massive 130,000ha (501 square miles) montainous land extended over Aomori and Akita prefecture. In December 1993, it became the first Japanese World Natural Heritage Site along with Yakushima in Kagoshima prefecture.

In the towns of Fukaura or Ajigasawa, and the village of Nishimeya there are a few of the entrances to the forests of Shirakami Sanchi in Aomori.

Some popular locations for visiting the Shirakami Sanchi are the Anmon Waterfall in Nishimeya-mura, the mother free of Tsugaru Toge (Tusgaru pass), the Kurokuma Waterfall in Ajigasawa, and Lake Juniko in Fukaura.

Ginzan Onsen looks curiously like a movie set. It's most popular in the winter, when snow adds a dreamy touch to the wooden eaves and surrounding mountains. Notoya Ryokan, one of the grandest
in Ginzan, is a fine choice. The three structure, compete with balconies, elaborate woodwork and a curious garret tower, dates from 1922.

Ginzan Onsen is in easy striking distance of Yamagata. Take the Yamagata shinkansen (bullet train) to its terminus in Oishida, then transfer to one of up to five daily buses leaving for Ginza Onsen from the west exit bus pool.

Oirase Stream is a picturesque mountain stream in Aomori Prefecture that is one of Japan's most famous and popular autumn colours destinations. The stream flows along the floor of the Oirase Gorge, winding among trees which, while a lush green in spring and summer, sun brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange from late October through early November.

Oirase Stream is the only outlet draining Lake Towada. It starts at Nenokuchi where there is a bus stop and a boat pier with connections to nearby Yasumiya Town. An easy-to-walk hiking trail leads along the most scenic, upper passage of the stream between Nenokuchi and Ishigedo, with many bridges, waterfalls and bus stops along the way. the trail is about 9 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours to walk one way.

Dewa Sanzan is the corrective title for three sacred peaks – Haguro-san, Gas-san and Yudono-san – which are believed to represent birth, death and rebirth respectively.

The Dewa Sanzan are located in the centre of Yamagata prefecture, between Tsuruoka and Yamagata city. Mount Haguro (414m) is the smallest of the three and buses go as far as the summit, although you should walk the 2,445 stone step. On your way, you will pass a 600-year old wooden Five-Story Pagoda ('gojunoto') built without a single nail. The summit of Mount Haguro is defined by a shrine and torii. The main attraction is the Sanzan Gosaiden Temple, venerating the spirits of all three mountains.

It is possible to visit the three peaks in a long, hectic day, but it is advisable to spend a night in one of the numerous shukubo (temple lodging).
